| Kampala, Uganda is a city of 1.5-million people, but almost half of them are farmers in one form or another. They squeeze tiny vegetable gardens onto small plots of land, or raise cows or chickens on one-acre lots. One lady grows mushrooms in the three-foot space between her house and her neighbor’s. She sells the mushrooms for three times the average weekly income in Uganda. For many city dwellers, raising a few vegetables or chickens makes a big difference in their quality of life. For other residents, it’s a huge smelly mess they want cleaned up. Michelle Betz reports. |
