Wooing Afghan Farmers Off the Drug Trade

Afghanistan supplies 90% of the world’s heroin. And heroin money funds warlords, the Taliban, and other terrorist groups in Afghanistan. So the US and other countries are trying to convince poor Afghan poppy farmers to grow other crops, such as beets, wheat, and okra. But the drug lords offer the farmers loans and free seeds to grow poppies. If that doesn’t work, they resort to threats.
