The British Forced Marriage Unit handles about 300 cases a year of people being forced into marriages they don’t want. Sometimes it involves children as young as 11-years old. In fact, so-called “honor crimes,” such as rape and assault, even murder, usually occur among immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Peter Abbott of Great Britain’s Forced Marriage Unit tells host Peggy Wehmeyer youngsters being forced into marriage often undergo emotional and physical pressure. Usually, they are taken overseas where the marriage is to be performed. But the Forced Marriage Unit can step in to stop the ceremony, rescue the young victim, and return them to Britain.
