Somaliland is a region the size of Pennsylvania that sits on Somalia's northern border. Seventeen years ago, the province broke away from Somalia and declared itself a free and independent country. But no other government has recognized an independent Somaliland, so from the world's perspective, it officially remains a province of Somalia.
