Violence once again has erupted in Nigeria’s chaotic Niger Delta. Oil refineries have been the target of kidnappings, shootings, and bombs. The Niger Delta has one of the richest oil fields in the world. It’s also the source of almost all of the revenue for the government of Nigeria. But impoverished residents in the delta don’t see their lives being improved by oil. Freelance journalist Elizabeth Dickinson talks with host Peggy Wehmeyer by satellite phone from Lagos about what lies at the heart of the violence and who is causing all the trouble.
