| In Bolivia, clothes define a person’s status. Businesswomen have short hair, and wear trim skirts and heels. But traditional women in Bolivia, who work as servants in service-related jobs, wear velveteen skirts, have long braids, and wear a straw hat. For the first time, Bolivia has elected an indigenous president. And his minister of justice is a woman who wears velveteen skirts, long braids, and a straw hat. Perhaps being indigenous will become fashionable now? Mary Losure explains in this Reporter’s Notebook. |
