| There are a host of reasons for sharp increases in the price of corn, wheat, rice, and cooking oil in countries around the world. Bio-fuel production, the demand for beef, droughts, and market speculation are all factors in the rising cost of basic foodstuffs. One solution for Africa is to make the continent more self-sufficient by helping small-scale farmers become better producers.
