Photographs of women with their arms and legs hacked off during Sierra Leone's brutal civil war so touched beauty shop operator Diane Stevens in Bowie, Maryland she felt compelled to do something about it.Stevens and five other women went to Sierra Leone and set up a beauty salon.They trained women how to be beauticians who then barter their services in return for food and medical care for themselves and their families.
