| In southeast Turkey there is a centuries old tradition known as the agar. The word “agar” means the one "who exercises power.” Agars are members of ruling families who own huge areas of land in the rural areas of Turkey. In a system that sounds more suited to the medieval age, the agars also own the villages. Much of village life is determined by the wishes of the ruling agar. But as Dorian Jones reports, some villages have had enough, and are now challenging the system. |
