Part 1 of a 3-part series: At the end of the month, the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo will go to the polls to elect a new president. It's the first time in more than four decades they'll choose their own leader. But this vast central African nation is still recovering from a civil war that left four million people dead. A peace deal was signed three years ago, but the conflict continues. Many hope this election will finally end the bloodletting, and horrific crimes against women. During the civil war, soldiers used rape as a weapon to control and humiliate women. Recovering from the trauma of rape is difficult, but thousands of women in the Congo are finally getting help.
