Research at the University of Oregon has revealed that large numbers can have a numbing effect when it comes to charitable giving. Psychologist Paul Slovic says people will give money to help a single individual, but are less likely to give to two or more individuals, or to a cause representing multiple victims. Slovic says Americans’ sense of compassion fades when they are faced with large numbers.
