Questions for Jewelers and Additional Talking Points
Another way to advocate for those inadvertently victimized by the sales of blood diamonds, is to talk to your local jeweler(s). Ask questions and raise your concerns with them; This will pressure the industry to fully comply with the Kimberly Process and to develop and enforce their own independent monitoring system. Because you are potential customer, they care about what you think, so let them know!

Here are some questions that we recommend that you ask:
  • Ask if they can provide a chain of warranties that can prove that their diamonds have gone through legitimate channels, which have sanctioned by the Kimberley Process. Also ask whether this chain of warranties is being monitored by an independent agent and if not why.
  • Demand to see a Kimberley Process Certificate before buying (or pretending to buy) a diamond.
  • Ask them to raise these concerns with their regional diamond association.

    Additional Talking Points:
    • We know that the diamond industry has been working hard to set in motion a certification regimen that will monitor the flow of diamonds, and we encourage its swift implementation.
    • While we know that conflict diamonds aren't the majority of diamonds sold worldwide, the devastation and human rights abuses that they help fund cannot be under-estimated. As jewelers, your support is critical in demanding that the most expedient measures be taken to stop conflict diamonds from infiltrating the legitimate diamond market.
    • We are asking you to talk to the World Diamond Council and to members of Congress to let your concerns and support for strong legislation on conflict diamonds be heard.
    • We also encourage you to keep abreast of developments on the issue of conflict diamonds. We know that you don't want to sell diamonds that may have contributed to human rights abuses but at the moment there is no guarantee that some diamonds in your store do not come from rebel controlled areas in Africa.
    • Public support for conflict diamonds legislation will show your commitment to selling only legitimate diamonds through your store and passage of the act will safeguard your industry from association with blood diamonds.
