Aid Organizations Targeted by LRA in N. Uganda

The leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), Joseph Kony, has instructed his commanders to ambush humanitarian organization trucks operating in northern Uganda.

People who have escaped reported that the rebels repeatedly asked them which organizations were bringing food to the camps and wanted to know when the organizations brought food and medicine to the camps.

In the past week, in two separate incidences, Oxfam trucks were ambushed and in one of the ambushes one of the trucks’ drivers was injured.

This happened as they were crossing from Pader to Kitgum district on the 11th of May.

In the weekly security meeting held on Friday, representatives of the different humanitarian organizations in Gulu showed concern over the new developments.

One member explained that for a while the LRA rebels had not been targeting humanitarian organizations. “They would hit at any vehicle and if it had what they wanted that would be it. But now that they aim to hit our vehicles we need to take extra precaution.”

The rebels are more interested in food and medicine. On Wednesday, the rebels looted about 40 cows and five people. Though the national army got 10 cows the five people had not returned. This happened after the second attack of the convoy that had the Oxfam vehicles, along Palonga- Kitgum road.

It was also reported by War Child (one of the NGOs operating in northern Uganda) that they had not been able to carry out their activities on the previous day because of the rebel presence. This was at Bobi internally displaced people’s camp, near Gulu town.
