    Sherisse Butler, Barnard College
When Sherisse Butler, a junior at Barnard College in New York City, heard about the devastating effect of HIV/AIDS on the people of Africa, she decided to take a stand and make a difference with her choir group. On November 17, 2002, the Columbia University Gospel Choir and several other on-campus performance groups came together to host a concert to benefit those most affected by HIV/AIDS – the children. During the event, the Hope Initiative was presented to an audience of over 300 students. Rev. Michel Faulkner spoke to the students about the Uganda Vulnerable Children Education Project and challenged the students to pledge to send 100 children impacted by AIDS to secondary school in Uganda, over the course of their school year.

Anna Pier, St. Francis Prep HS, New York
Seventeen year old a senior at … High School in Queens, NY, traveled to Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda on a Vision trip accompanying her father, Rev. Mac Pier and a group led by World Vision NY. They visited World Vision projects in communities devastated by HIV/AIDS where many orphans are forced to become heads of households and struggle to survive. Ana met little Ana who is HIV positive, and her heart was broken. When she returned to New York she was determined to get her school peers to do something. As a result of her advocacy, part of the proceeds from the first school dance in the fall were donated toward the Uganda Vulnerable Children Education Project.
Whether you are a high school student or in college, you can make a difference by mobilizing your campus to act on behalf of the poor within our city and beyond. Let your light shine brightly, join us. For the children.
