When the Bottom Line is Love
In 1999, a massive earthquake rocked Taiwan, toppling apartment buildings and generating massive landslides. City dwellers were made homeless. Hillside farmers, having lost their land, came out of the mountains looking for relief.

A group of concerned employees at Lucent Technologies New York offices approached World Vision to ask how they could partner in the relief effort. They were able to raise employee donations and secure a company match through Lucent’s corporate giving division.

Goldman Sachs, and Computer Associates started similar employee-driven partnerships in the New York offices. Goldman Sachs gave a collection culled from its offices worldwide, and through its global partnerships. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were raised and were used to build an entire housing development for displaced earthquake victims.

Computer Associates has been an especially strong World Vision partner. Corporate giving offices matched twice the amount its employees gave to the Taiwan quake effort. Company heads, Charles Wong and Sanjay Kumar helped in the effort. Computer Associates was also active in World Vision’s work in other countries, donating $1 million to a university in India. The money was used to award full scholarships to students training as engineers.
