    World Vision - New York Backpack Drive
    June 9 – September 5, 2005


    THE NEED FOR SCHOOL SUPPLIES

    The World Vision – New York Storehouse serves communities in the Bronx, Washington Heights and Harlem which have children, families, and teachers who face the burden of not having the resources needed for school.
      • 46 percent of families with children live below the poverty level in these communities
      • Each year, 75 percent of NYC teachers spend up to $750 of their own money on school supplies for their students and classrooms
    World Vision – New York is asking for your partnership to provide resources, which will enable New York City youth to reach their potential in the classroom.
    With your help, by September 5, 2005, World Vision – New York hopes to collect 2,500 backpacks to support these children.


    HOW YOU CAN HELP

    1. Collect backpacks and supplies at your workplace, church, or school – or simply donate a bag yourself!
    Steps to collecting and donating bags and supplies:
    1. Determine where you will collect and store bags
      (at your desk, lunch room, reception area, etc.)
    2. Set the final collection date and send an email to friends, family, co-workers (If you would like a template, e-mail us at: newyork@worldvision.org)
    3. Send a reminder email one week before the collection deadline
    4. Drop off or mail the bags to World Vision – New York’s Storehouse or Manhattan office. If you have over 25 bags, please call World Vision – New York’s Storehouse at 718.292.5600 to arrange a pick up.
    A. Items for backpack (place in one-gallon ziplock bag):
  • One package (7 or 8 count) wooden pencils without design
  • One package (10 or 12 count) ballpoint pens (blue or black ink)
  • Two composition books
  • One package (24 count) regular size crayons
  • One 12-inch ruler with metric measurements
  • One pencil sharpener
  • One large pink eraser
    B. Put this ziplock bag with items in a new, standard-sized backpack

    2. Donate (If you don't have time to collect bags, you can still help out!)
