    The Storehouse

    WHAT IS THE STOREHOUSE?

A community resource center that supplies the basic needs of children and families.

As the foundation of World Vision – New York's effort to meet basic needs in the greater New York metropolitan area, The Storehouse provides donated resources such as clothing, school supplies, and building materials to revitalize neighborhoods and sustain families as they break out of poverty into a hope-filled future.

    THE STOREHOUSE WORKS TO:

      • Supply new, high-quality resources such as school supplies, clothing, household goods, and emergency response materials received as surplus inventory from large corporations and local businesses.
      • Distribute items through local schools, churches, and community organizations to help children, families, and students in need.
      • Enable corporations who donate their goods to benefit from enhanced tax deductions, free up additional warehouse space, and foster positive public relations.

    SERVING GREATER NEW YORK

The Storehouse operates a 35,000-square-foot warehouse in the South Bronx. During its first year of operation (2004-2005), the program will distribute $8-12 million in donated products to serve schools, churches and community groups in the Bronx, Washington Heights, and Harlem. The program will also continue to serve several partners in communities that work with families facing prolonged hardship as a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Over the next three to five years, The Storehouse will expand operations and service to all five boroughs of New York City and the tri-state area.

    THE NEED FOR THE STOREHOUSE

In the Bronx, Harlem, and Washington Heights:
    • 46 percent of families with children live below the poverty level
    • 90.3 percent of students qualify to receive a free lunch
    • 84 percent of students did not meet state and city reading standards and 71 percent of students did not meet state and city math standards
    In New York City:
    • Each year, 75 percent of NYC teachers spend up to $750 of their own money on school supplies for their students and classrooms
