After the December tsunami struck southern Asia, the devastating reports started flooding in. Aceh, Indonesia, officials report that 1,000 teachers are missing and 50 percent of schools have been destroyed. This leaves 140,000 elementary and 20,000 junior-high students with nowhere to study and nothing to read or write with.
The need is great to provide children with even basic supplies so they can return to school. World Vision is committing to rebuilding schools and communities and giving the children the support and school supplies they need. A new report from the Basic Education Coalition shows that children's futures are also at risk as the education system has suffered huge losses. Sri Lankan authorities report that 112 schools were damaged or destroyed and
another 244 are currently being used to house refugees.
As of January 14, many children were able to go back to school in Thailand. Even though some schools are back in operation, many children are afraid to go back into the classroom - afraid to study so close to the water. The students are making do with what little they have since most of their school supplies were washed away by the waves that overtook their school buildings.
That's why World Vision is committed to rebuilding schools and infrastructures. Children need safe places to study and play. World Vision has also established children's centers where they can receive psychosocial support and basic necessities. Following this tragedy,
recovery is likely to take years, but rebuilding has already begun.
You and Your church can help bring hope for children affected by the Asia tsunami by creating SchoolTools Kits. They are simple to create! Each kit contains:
- One package (7 or 8 count) wooden pencils without designs
- One package (10 or 12 count) ballpoint pens - blue or black ink
- Two 6 x 9-inch steno notebooks
- One pencil sharpener
- One large pink eraser
- One package (24 count only) regular-size crayons
- One 12-inch ruler with metric measurements
- A greeting card signed by YOU! (Click here to access a Greeting Card)
Because the damage was so severe and wide spread, we are also asking you to consider taking an offering as an additional gift to the World Vision Educational Fund to help children and communities - helping to provide things like schools, furnished classrooms and an education for children in need. |
