Residential buildings, hospitals, schools, roads, bridges, and other critical infrastructure sustained significant damage.&nbsp;Thousands of families were displaced, and homes became unsafe or collapsed entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">&ldquo;We are deeply shaken and frightened,&rdquo; said Mar&iacute;a Andre&iacute;na Pernalete, a resident of Caracas and communications manager for World Vision in Venezuela. &ldquo;I was with my 2-year-old baby, <span data-teams=\"true\">my mother, and my husband. I received an alert just a few seconds before everything started shaking, and we gathered under a column.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Like many families in Caracas, Maria and her loved ones were unable to return home because of safety concerns and had to find safety at a nearby convent. &ldquo;We are very shaken by what happened. To date, World Vision has reached over <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36,720 <\/span>people<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across La Guaira, Caracas, and Miranda with emergency food aid, hygiene and water kits, recreational kits, child protection activities, and other essential items.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Teams continue to provide emergency food, clean water, safe sanitation, psychological first aid, and child protection services.<\/p>\n<p>As communities begin to recover, World Vision continues to support children and families through Child-Friendly Spaces in affected communities in Caracas. He lost family members, his livelihood, and much of his church building. Yet each day, he opens the church&rsquo;s doors to people who walk long distances in search of help, comfort, and hope. &ldquo;When I prayed to the Lord, I never imagined I would receive so much for others,&rdquo; Pastor Eusebio said. &ldquo;The earthquake has been challenging, but there has been immense support.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>His church in the hardest-hit area has become a place of refuge for families as they begin rebuilding their lives. But he knows recovery will take time.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is like a river that rises and then dries up,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s when the true tragedy begins.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>During the initial <a href=\"\/our-work\/disaster-relief\">disaster response<\/a>, World Vision U.S. deployed emergency relief supplies, including hygiene kits, tarps, generators, personal protective equipment (PPE), and other essential items, from its U.S. warehouse network.
