Every day, all around the world, a unique group of people get up, and as so many people, they go to work. But their work looks different and shows up in ways different from the rest. Some ride in SUVs on long, bumpy roads to visit remote communities. Some work in warehouses overseeing incoming and outgoing supplies. Some are medical personnel and see patients in tents with limited equipment. Some go to an office and sit in meetings and make their home in spreadsheets and reports.<\/p>\n

But regardless of where they carry out their work and what that work looks like, this unique set of people has one goal in mind: to help the most vulnerable people of the world. In essence, they’re modern-day, everyday superheroes. But you won’t see any blockbuster films made about them. No, they carry on their work in an unassuming way, because their work matters. It can mean the difference between life and death in many instances. Who are these workers? They’re humanitarian heroes.<\/p>\n

It’s a word you may have heard, but it may also prompt a lot of questions, like: How do you define a humanitarian? What is humanitarian work? What are examples of humanitarian work? You have these questions and more, and we’re here to help answer them. This article provides clarity and meaning around the word, the profession, and also World Humanitarian Day, which is recognized every August 19.<\/p>\n

What is a humanitarian?<\/h2>\n

People generally define humanitarian as meaning someone who helps other people, but it goes deeper than that. Let’s start with the dictionary definition. Merriam-Webster defines humanitarian as a person devoted to or working for the health and happiness of other people.<\/p>\n

That can still feel really broad. After all, we all need to work out to be healthy, but we wouldn’t say a fitness instructor is a humanitarian even though they’re devoted to working for the health and happiness of other people, right? Right. So let’s go a little deeper.<\/p>\n

The Cambridge Dictionary defines humanitarian as a person who is involved in or connected with improving people’s lives and reducing suffering. That still feels broad. After all, if your air conditioning goes out in the middle of a 100-degree heat wave, the repair person may feel like a hero because they’re reducing your suffering (and even potentially saving your life!), but it’s still not quite how we would define humanitarian work.<\/p>\n

Looking to the U.N., we see a more specific definition<\/a>: “Humanitarians support people in extreme need, often in areas affected by conflicts or disasters, by ensuring their most basic needs such as food, water, shelter, and protection are met.”<\/p>\n

That gets a lot more specific and hones in to the heart of humanitarian meaning.<\/p>\n

How do you define humanitarian work?<\/h2>\n

Having established what a humanitarian is, let’s look at how we can further identify and define a person who does humanitarian work. There may be people doing the work that seemingly meets the definition, but how can we further identify a humanitarian?<\/p>\n

The U.N. actually sets forth humanitarian principles<\/a> that guide anyone who calls themselves a humanitarian worker. Those principles include<\/a> humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence, each described below. These principles are rooted in International Humanitarian Law<\/a>, which the International Committee of the Red Cross led the way in developing and implementing. These were proclaimed in Vienna, Austria, in 1965 by the 20th<\/sup> International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement, and nearly every country has adopted these principles. So what do those principles mean<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Humanity:<\/h3>\n

Human suffering must be addressed wherever it is found. The purpose of humanitarian action is to protect life and health and ensure respect for human beings.<\/p>\n

Neutrality:<\/h3>\n

Humanitarian actors must not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious, or ideological nature.<\/p>\n

Impartiality:<\/h3>\n

Humanitarian action must be carried out on the basis of need alone, giving priority to the most urgent cases of distress and making no distinctions on the basis of nationality, race, gender, religious belief, class, or political opinions.<\/p>\n

Independence:<\/h3>\n

Humanitarian action must be autonomous from the political, economic, military, or other objectives that any actor may hold with regard to areas where humanitarian action is being implemented.<\/p>\n

These principles are critical aspects that set apart humanitarian workers from workers who may have other motivations. Amina Mohammed serves as the deputy secretary-general<\/a> of the U.N., and she has said, “Preserving humanitarian space also requires that we do not blur the lines between military operations, political objectives, and humanitarian efforts. Upholding the principles of humanitarian action … is essential to building trust.”<\/p>\n

What are examples of humanitarian work?<\/h2>\n

If we define humanitarians as people who are supporting people in extreme need, affected by conflict<\/a> or disasters<\/a>, working to ensure their basic needs — and we define humanitarian work as adhering to the four principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence — now it’s time to get practical. What does that look like in a practical sense on any given day around the world?<\/p>\n

Food aid:<\/h3>\n

One of the forms of humanitarian work that is likely most familiar to many is helping to alleviate hunger<\/a>. People face starvation around the world for a variety of reasons. Sometimes rains haven’t come, so crops have failed and regions face a food shortage. Sometimes people have been forced to flee<\/a> their homes due to conflict, so it creates an influx of people in a region that isn’t equipped with enough food resources to handle that sudden increase. Either way, food is a basic necessity, so much humanitarian work focuses on feeding people who are hungry.<\/p>\n

Clean water:<\/h3>\n

Even more important than having food is having access to clean water<\/a>. It’s needed primarily for drinking but also for cooking, cleaning, and bathing. As with providing food, people may need clean water because they’ve been forced to uproot their lives to flee violence or conflict. But they may also be facing a water shortage as extreme weather<\/a> patterns dry up water sources that previously provided water access. Even if they can access rivers, lakes, ponds, or even tarns, often the water is dirty and full of contaminants that cause widespread disease and even death. Humanitarian work may involve providing immediate short-term solutions like bottled water, but it can also involve designing and building complex and permanent water solutions<\/a> that will meet this basic need for people now and in future generations.<\/p>\n

Medical and healthcare:<\/h3>\n

As people seek safety, they often can arrive at a new destination with long-term effects of hunger and dehydration, which medical staff may need to address with more than basic water and food. Their condition may involve myriad health<\/a> concerns and need medical treatment. People often  experience injuries during their journeys and need treatment for those as well. In some instances, women may have experienced physical or sexual assault and need to receive care specific to those horrific experiences.<\/p>\n

In non-emergency situations, humanitarian medical care might look like providing maternal and child health<\/a> to pregnant women who don’t have access to basics like pre-natal vitamins. Or it may look like community groups that teach women how to prepare food that using a variety of nutrients so their children don’t become malnourished. It may mean bringing them in for regular checkups to ensure they’re growing at a proper weight. It could be providing life-saving vaccinations for children in areas where they lack access to such care.<\/p>\n

Medical care may also look like combatting HIV and AIDS<\/a> by providing education about transmission and programs to reduce the stigma of testing and a positive test result. Anti-retroviral drugs may be provided to support compromised immune systems for adults and prevent pregnant women from passing the disease on to their child in utero. It could mean providing medicine to children who may have been born with HIV before their mother knew they were HIV-positive.<\/p>\n

Shelter:<\/h3>\n

When someone has been displaced<\/a> from their home due to conflict or a natural disaster, one of the scariest thoughts is where will they stay. Where will they be safe to sleep and rest, to change in privacy, to be with their families? Shelter is a basic human need, and humanitarian work also involves providing both temporary and long-term shelter for families in need. It could look like providing sturdy tarps or tents for immediate shelter, but it can also look like helping rebuild homes that were destroyed to provide long-term shelter.<\/p>\n

Psychosocial support:<\/h3>\n

When people have fled violence and conflict, once they get to a safe location they’re forced to then process the trauma they have experienced. Humanitarian work also involves addressing the emotional and psychological effects people have suffered. They may provide mental health<\/a> support for adults, and they may operate Child-Friendly Spaces for children to heal from their experiences by focusing on processing their emotions through playing, singing, engaging in art<\/a>, and learning.<\/p>\n

Is humanitarian work dangerous?<\/h2>\n

In many contexts, humanitarian work can prove to be dangerous. Under International Humanitarian Law, humanitarian workers are supposed to be protected and free to carry out their work, even in conflict zones, without fear of attack. But the global conflict landscape is ever-changing, and often that law isn’t respected so these life-saving workers<\/a> are putting themselves at risk<\/a> simply by trying to help.<\/p>\n

In fact, in the 2024 Humanitarian Outcomes Aid Worker Security Report<\/a>, it cited 2023 as the deadliest year for aid workers ever recorded, with 280 people killed, which was more than double the annual average.<\/p>\n

While there is no clear number of how many humanitarian workers there are globally, some estimate there are several hundred thousand across all the different existing aid organizations. That’s a lot of people who put their lives at risk each day to help others, and we mourn the loss of any person who dies in the line of service.<\/p>\n

What do humanitarian organizations do?<\/h2>\n

You may have seen scenes in movies or in the news decades ago that depict chaos and randomness in humanitarian aid. In reality, in the 21st<\/sup> century, humanitarian aid work is highly organized and professionally managed, operated, and implemented by trained, experienced, professionals and humanitarian organizations.<\/p>\n

Certainly, humanitarian organizations are filled with humanitarian workers who are doing the direct work detailed above to help people who are suffering. But humanitarian organizations are also comprised of people who collectively come together to do the behind-the-scenes work of supporting these extreme and urgent needs.<\/p>\n

For example, a nonprofit humanitarian organization has to be run effectively and efficiently so that the most money can be used to reach the most people. That involves having employees who are trained and experienced in business management and business operations such as finance, legal, logistics, and program management. And then — because we all know money doesn’t grow on trees — humanitarian organizations are also comprised of people who help fundraise the money that is spent on the humanitarian work. That could involve people skilled in marketing, communications, or grant writing so they can secure program funding through private donors as well as both governmental and nongovernmental humanitarian aid grants. And then those organizations also need people to do the day-to-day operations like processing mail donations, answering phone calls and emails from donors and potential donors, and maintaining and cleaning the facilities used.<\/p>\n

What else might humanitarian organizations do?<\/h2>\n

Beyond implementing programming and the operational management that is needed to function effectively, many humanitarian organizations also have an advocacy aspect of their work as well. This work can appear in a few different ways.<\/p>\n

Advocating for legal protections:<\/h3>\n

Humanitarian workers who do advocacy may lobby their elected and appointed government workers, urging them to create and pass laws that provide protection to people most impacted by humanitarian crises. They also spend time organizing other people to advocate to government employees so that they can build strength in numbers for their cause.<\/p>\n

Advocating for survivors:<\/h3>\n

Often in conflict situations, people suffer unimaginable violence, especially women and girls<\/a>. Some humanitarian workers do advocacy work by seeking out legal representation and legal action on behalf of survivors, such as women who have been forced into sex work or other forced labor, children who have been forced to work, or people who have been abused by military, law enforcement, or government officials.<\/p>\n

Amplifying voices of vulnerable people:<\/h3>\n

People living in extreme poverty are often ignored by government leaders and want to advocate for themselves, their families, and their communities, but due to oppressive systems or corrupt governments, they may not know how to make their voices heard by the right people. Because of this, some humanitarian workers help people in those communities learn how to advocate for themselves<\/a>. They teach them ways they can effectively lead change in their communities through the systems and processes that are present in those particular places. They also teach them how to come together so that their voices are amplified<\/a> by larger groups of people advocating together.<\/p>\n

When humanitarian workers carry out advocacy work either alongside people in affected communities or on behalf of those who are suffering, it can lead to long-term change. This is experienced through increased legal protections, justice for people who commit crimes against people to deter others from also committing those crimes, and long-term cultural and community change as people stand up for themselves and their rights as humans.<\/p>\n

What is World Humanitarian Day?<\/h2>\n

You may have heard of World Humanitarian Day<\/a> and wondered what that’s about. Surely all the work explored in this article can’t be done in a single day, right? That is 100% correct, and World Humanitarian Day, which is recognized each year on August 19, isn’t meant be a single day all this life-saving work gets done but rather a designated time for celebrating and recognizing the thousands of humanitarian workers around the world.<\/p>\n

The U.N. General Assembly established World Humanitarian Day in December 2008 to bring awareness and public understanding to the complexities of humanitarian work around the world. Humanitarian work is often dangerous and carried out in dangerous places, so the day is also meant to honor humanitarian workers who have lost their lives or been injured in the course of their work. Each year, the U.N. also chooses a theme and uniting message for the day.<\/p>\n

The first World Humanitarian Day<\/a> was recognized on August 19, 2009. The day was chosen to honor the 22 humanitarian workers who died in an attack on the U.N. office in Iraq<\/a> on August 19, 2003.<\/p>\n

“It is, above all, a day on which we renew our commitment to help vulnerable, voiceless, and marginalized people wherever they may be,” then U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said<\/a> on that first World Humanitarian Day. “That is the abiding mission of the humanitarian community. This is also a day on which we pay tribute to the legions of heroic humanitarian personnel. These men and women come from many backgrounds. But they share a conviction that one person’s suffering is everyone’s responsibility.<\/p>\n

“World Humanitarian Day is meant to shine a spotlight on people in need, to ensure they receive the assistance they deserve. Let us redouble our efforts toward this goal. Let us fulfill our humanitarian imperative.”<\/p>\n

Is World Vision a humanitarian organization?<\/h2>\n

Yes, World Vision<\/a> is an international, Christian humanitarian organization. We help anyone who is in need in the places where we work, regardless of their faith. We have operations in nearly 100 countries and have over 30,000 employees around the world collectively doing the programmatic, operations, advocacy, and fundraising work required to help millions of people affected by conflict and disasters.<\/p>\n

Are all humanitarian organizations faith-based?<\/h2>\n

No. While some have faith ties, not every humanitarian organization is rooted in a faith tradition. Some simply want to help because they believe it’s the right thing to do.<\/p>\n

For us at World Vision, we want to help not just because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it’s what Jesus said we should do<\/a>. Scripture is filled with calls to help vulnerable people, so in choosing to do that through humanitarian work, we believe we are acting as Jesus would have. Jesus helped people who had different faith beliefs than him. Jesus helped men, women, and children alike. Jesus fed people who were hungry. He listened to people and their problems. He met them in their pain and suffering. He wept with them. He healed people who were sick. He even raised people from the dead (well, we can’t do that).<\/p>\n

How can I support humanitarian work around the world?<\/h2>\n

Glad you asked! There’s no shortage of people to help, so we need as many partnering with us as possible. Here are three ways you can help.<\/p>\n

Pray<\/a> for humanitarian work.<\/h3>\n
