{"id":36840,"date":"2018-02-14T13:29:55","date_gmt":"2018-02-14T21:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.worldvision.org\/?p=36840"},"modified":"2023-05-25T10:07:24","modified_gmt":"2023-05-25T17:07:24","slug":"meghan-markle-humanitarian-global-citizen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.worldvision.org\/charitable-giving-news-stories\/meghan-markle-humanitarian-global-citizen","title":{"rendered":"Meghan Markle: Humanitarian and global citizen"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>We came to know and love her as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usanetwork.com\/suits\/cast\/rachel-zane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rachel Zane<\/a>, paralegal-turned-full-fledged-attorney on the hit USA legal drama, &ldquo;Suits.&rdquo; But in real life, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm1620783\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meghan Markle<\/a> has long been involved in humanitarian efforts and charity work &mdash; from volunteering in soup kitchens as a teenager, to advocating for gender equality with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.N.<\/a>, and raising awareness for the world&rsquo;s most vulnerable children.<\/p>\n<h2>Seeing development firsthand<\/h2>\n<p>In 2016, Meghan traveled to <a href=\"\/our-work\/country-profiles\/rwanda\">Rwanda<\/a> as a Global Ambassador for World Vision. She was able to see firsthand the impact that clean water has on the lives of children and communities in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>As part of her humanitarian work in Rwanda, Meghan visited the Kabeza borehole. As a strong advocate for gender equality, Meghan was particularly passionate about bringing awareness to girls&rsquo; lack of access to education.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think there&rsquo;s a misconception that access to clean water is just about clean drinking water, which, of course, it is. But it&rsquo;s so much more than that,&rdquo; Meghan said. &ldquo;Access to clean water in a community keeps young girls in school because <a href=\"\/clean-water-news-stories\/long-path-clean-water\">they aren&rsquo;t walking hours each day<\/a> to source water for their families.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Girls are better equipped and feel safe to attend school when they have access to clean water and latrines and are provided a counselor and a special room for when they are menstruating.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36841\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36841\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36841 lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/wvusstatic.com\/email\/met3\/spacer.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wvusstatic.com\/www\/uploads\/2018\/05\/meghan-markle-friend-rwanda.jpg 800w, https:\/\/wvusstatic.com\/www\/uploads\/2018\/05\/meghan-markle-friend-rwanda-640x400.jpg 640w, https:\/\/wvusstatic.com\/www\/uploads\/2018\/05\/meghan-markle-friend-rwanda-200x125.jpg 200w, https:\/\/wvusstatic.com\/www\/uploads\/2018\/05\/meghan-markle-friend-rwanda-360x225.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" data-src=\"https:\/\/wvusstatic.com\/www\/uploads\/2018\/05\/meghan-markle-friend-rwanda.jpg\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(&copy;World Vision)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>A stream of creativity<\/h2>\n<p>While visiting Mbandazi primary school, Meghan taught students to paint with watercolors using water from a newly installed pipeline in their community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was an amazing experience, taking water from one of the water sources in the community and using it with the children to paint pictures of what they dream to be when they grow up,&rdquo; said Meghan. &ldquo;I saw that water is not just a life source for a community, but it can really be a source for creative imagination, and how lucky I am to have been a part of that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Meghan later brought the paintings back to Toronto, where she lived while filming &ldquo;Suits,&rdquo; to share the student artists&rsquo; stories at a special World Water Day event called The Watercolour Project. Continuing to advocate strongly for gender equality, Meghan focused on bringing greater awareness to girls&rsquo; lack of access to education. It doesn&rsquo;t need to be big. It just needs to be something,&rdquo; Meghan said.<\/p>\n<p>As she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royal.uk\/royalwedding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prepares to step into her new role as part of the royal family<\/a>, she will no doubt continue to be a spokesperson for causes close to her heart.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Meghan is a true humanitarian,&rdquo; said Lara Dewar, chief marketing and development officer for World Vision in Canada. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re deeply grateful for her contribution as a global ambassador for World Vision over the past two years and for helping to raise awareness for the world&rsquo;s most vulnerable children. I personally witnessed Meghan&rsquo;s passion to improve the lives of children and know her heart to advocate for the rights of girls &mdash; to hear and amplify their important voices. She will undoubtedly bring vast energy to her charity work as a member of the royal family.
