W<\/span>est of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in t<\/span>he<\/span> community of Wauwatosa, residents of two assisted-living centers share a deep appreciation for goats and the benefits they bring to families in need more than half a world away.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Many of our residents have spent their lives on farms and understand the value and sense of worth that animals bring to a family,” <\/span>says<\/span> <\/span>Derek M. Wolter, pastor of Lutheran Home and Harwood Place<\/a><\/span>. “While our residents are limited in many areas of their lives, they are more than glad to support the work of the Gospel <\/span>— <\/span>both at home and around the world through their offerings.”<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

This fellowship of women and men are among the generous givers who <\/span>choos<\/span>e<\/span> gifts through the World Vision Gift Catalog<\/a> <\/span>to help <\/span>lift<\/span> families out of poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n

While our residents are limited in many areas of their lives, they are more than glad to support the work of the Gospel <\/span>— <\/span>both at home and around the world through their offerings<\/span>.—Pastor Derek M. Wolter<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n

“Residents quickly fell in love with goats and their benefit to families in need,” Wolter <\/span>says<\/span>. “They are cheerful partners in supporting our brothers and sisters around the world.”<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

For the last two years, they’ve gathered their 25-cent bingo wins and <\/span>$1<\/span> personal donations to gift goats through the World Vision Gift Catalog. Since 2017, residents have gifted 98 goats by contributing $9,270<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

G<\/span>ifting goats bring a multitude of blessings<\/span>.<\/span> The milk provides <\/span>protein and nourishment to help children grow<\/span>,<\/span> and goats help diversi<\/span>f<\/span>y a family’s <\/span>income<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

“This, by far, is our most popular mission outreach,” says Carey Bartlett, spokeswoman for Lutheran Home and Harwood Place. Mission outreach offerings are collected on the fourth and fifth Sundays of the month<\/span> and on holidays<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>including<\/span> Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Easter.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Two residents, <\/span>Ruth Reitz and Wally Kruger, <\/span>who ha<\/span>ve<\/span> since passed away, had championed the cause.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

“The loving<\/span> Ruth — <\/span>who has since passed<\/span> —<\/span> was the initial backer of this ministry,” <\/span>says<\/span> <\/span>Carey<\/span>.<\/span> “She was interested in world missions. She felt we should support causes that helped people meet the needs of their families through <\/span>some kind of interactive<\/span> source.”<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Another former resident, Wally Krueger, grew up on a farm and was <\/span>also <\/span>committed <\/span>to the cause<\/span>. Wally served in World War II and was part of the Nur<\/span>em<\/span>berg Trials, <\/span>translat<\/span>ing<\/span> <\/span>German to English for the U.S. Army<\/span>,<\/span> <\/span>Bartl<\/span>ett <\/span>says<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

“He served in Germany during the occupation, witnessed farm families struggle<\/span>,<\/span> and recognized the value of farm animals to families in poverty,” Carey <\/span>says<\/span>. “He was a big supporter of the goat<\/span>s program<\/span>,<\/span> and Wally would remind other residents that the collection would be happening on that week<\/span> and that it was for goats.” <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
