Almost two-thirds of American mothers say they would prefer to receive a Mother’s Day gift that would help someone else — gifts like those found in the World Vision Gift Catalog.
This year, Americans are expected to spend more than $20 billion on Mother’s Day.
But a survey has revealed that nearly one-third of American moms say they often pretend to like the Mother’s Day gifts they receive from family members.
According to the 2012 study commissioned by World Vision and conducted online by Harris Interactive, nearly two in three American mothers said they would prefer to receive a meaningful gift that would help someone else instead of a traditional Mother’s Day gift.
The survey also found most adults who have a mother or mother figure would like to honor their moms with a gift that empowers other mothers.
Traci Coker, senior director for World Vision’s Gift Catalog, says that the Gift Catalog is full of gifts that empower women.
For instance, a goat for $75 — the catalog’s number-one seller — enables a mother to nourish her children with healthy milk, cheese, and yogurt. Goats also give a much-needed income boost by providing offspring and extra dairy products for sale at the market. The income helps ensure that her children are able to attend school.
Or, you can help new moms by giving them the supplies they need to care for their newborns during the first critical weeks of life. For $77, a new mother and baby kit includes a bassinet, cloth diapers, a blanket, a container for clean water, and soap. Your gift will also provide infant care training for mothers-to-be.

“This survey shows what moms really want,” says Coker. “With all the money spent on Mother’s Day gifts, we want those gifts to have impact.”
