Pakatiis the expression Malawians have for pregnancy. It means "in between life and death." That definition fits the experiences of women in Malawi: one in seven dies during pregnancy or childbirth.

Joanne Jorissen, a nurse who moved to Malawi from Texas three years ago to work as a midwife, has been trying to improve their odds. She founded the African Mother's Health Initiative and describes her experiences as a midwife in Malawi.
