Flash flooding in Nepal leaves over 1,000 missing, including 65 Americans

KATHMANDU, Nepal (August 27, 2026) — Devastating flash floods in Nepal on Wednesday hit the country’s Rasuwa District and nearby communities, destroying homes, infrastructure and livelihoods, and leaving over 1,000 individuals missing, including at least 65 Americans. Local police report at least 353 people dead. Search and rescue teams continue to look for survivors of the natural disaster.

World Vision is mobilizing its emergency response team to support children and families affected by the emergency. The response will initially focus on the most urgent needs for those affected by the flooding, including food, safe drinking water and emergency shelter kits. As emergency assessments continue, additional humanitarian needs will likely include hygiene supplies, child protection services, psychosocial support, and restoration of essential community infrastructure.

Children are particularly vulnerable during disasters due to displacement, disruption of education, psychosocial distress, family separation, and increased protection risks. World Vision  is monitoring the evolving situation and advocating for the protection, safety, and wellbeing of affected children and families.

“The scale and suddenness of this flood have left many families facing immense uncertainty and hardship.” said Roslyn Gabriel, World Vision’s National Director in Nepal. “Our hearts are with those who have lost loved ones, those who remain missing, and communities whose homes and livelihoods have been affected. We are particularly concerned for the safety, wellbeing, and protection of children, who are often among the most vulnerable during emergencies.”

The flooding began on the Tibetan side of the Nepal-China border and moved rapidly downstream through the Trishuli River corridor, severely affecting communities along the way, including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and others.
