How do people make a living?
| Most families work in the fishing and agricultural industries. Fishermen face a great deal of uncertainty, since they never know how much they will catch in a day. Environmental factors play a large role in a family's income. Fortunately, the climate is especially good for growing melons and coconuts. The community hopes to soon reopen a processing plant that specializes in exporting melon to the United States. Hurricanes, earthquakes, and erosion have hurt the agricultural industry, but the hard-working people of Garita Palmera are determined. | ||
What are the goals of the project?World Vision is helping to make preventative health care more accessible to families. We are also working to ensure that students are able to attend class and complete their education. Vocational training opportunities will assist young people in developing their skills, finding good jobs, and contributing to their family’s well being. Farmers will receive additional training in agricultural production. Parents and community leaders will learn emergency response and prevention. World Vision is also working to strengthen local churches and their outreach ministries. What challenges does the community face? Two-thirds of the families in this region are living in poverty. The Family Sponsorship program will help address the most common factors leading to financial struggles, including a lack of education, health problems, unhealthy addictions, and agricultural difficulties. What are World Vision’s first priorities for the project? The initial phase of the program will include the construction of two new school classrooms, training for community health workers, and agricultural assistance.
