World Vision helps transform communities through child sponsorship

The best way to change the lives of children is to change the world in which they live. And the best way to change their world is to foster self-sufficiency within their communities. This is what World Vision child sponsorship does.

You'll help provide your sponsored child, their family, and community with access to life-saving basics such as nutritious food, clean water, health care, educational opportunities, and more.

You'll have the chance to build a one-to-one relationship with your sponsored child that could change both your lives through letters, photos, birthday cards, and more.

  1. Start by searching for a child

Search for a child based on gender, country, birthday, or age.

  2. Choose a girl or boy to sponsor

In 10 days, you'll receive your Welcome Kit with a photo, sponsorship DVD, and more.

  3. Watch for the first letter from your child

Within 6 to 12 weeks, be looking in the mail for your first letter from your sponsored child.
You'll also receive an annual progress report with a new photo each year.

Learn about sponsorship

How does sponsorship help children?

Millions of children around the world need help to break the never-ending cycle of poverty. Hunger weakens them. Unsafe drinking water makes them sick. Missing out on an education keeps them from reaching their potential.

As a sponsor, you will help provide a child with sustainable access to appropriate life-changing basics like nutritious food, clean water, healthcare, and education.

Child sponsorship also helps families and communities lift themselves out of poverty by providing assistance like job training, business coaching, small loans, and agricultural support.

How does child sponsorship work?

Sponsorship brings change to more than just one child. The benefits you help provide will extend to each child's family, his or her community, and other children in need. That's because World Vision plans and works alongside local community members to help build healthy communities for children in impoverished places.

World Vision partners with sponsored children's communities over the long term to address critical needs and help communities become self-sustaining.

Will I get to know my sponsored child?

You'll be given the opportunity to personally connect with your sponsored child — building a relationship that could change both your lives. "I know my sponsor," says Solange, an 11-year-old sponsored girl from Rwanda. "She writes me letters. I love her very much. She sponsors me because she loves me . . . it's good to be sponsored."

How can I know that my donations are effective?

We are committed to using all contributions to our work wisely and effectively. By leveraging or combining funds from child sponsors and other contributors with government grants and goods donated by corporations, we ensure that all gifts entrusted to us have maximum impact.

In 2011, 86 percent of World Vision's total operating expenses were used for programs that benefit children, families, and communities in need.

What do I receive when I sponsor a child?

Every child sponsor receives:

  • A welcome kit with a photo and information about your sponsored child plus an introductory DVD
  • The opportunity to write and receive letters, send small packages and even email your child
  • Annual progress reports with updated photos of your child

what our sponsors have to say
I am so thankful for all the happiness and true joy she has brought to me and my family, so much more than the small amount we send for her sponsorship each month.

-Joy F.
I can say with certainty that child sponsorship really does make a difference.

-Jeff G.
One of my favorite letters came from the mother of our sponsored child, Lillian, who is two years old. She had traced Lillian's little hand print on her letter. I kept that hand print out to see for a long time.
