Poverty in Haiti - the need is great

World Vision Haiti has been in the frontlines, responding to emergencies like droughts, floods, earthquakes, storms and the cholera epidemic. We were one of the first organizations that responded to the disastrous 2010 earthquake that took the life of more than 200,000 people. Most recently, we responded to Hurricane Matthew. The poorest nation in the western hemisphere is located in an area already prone to hurricanes and tropical storms. Recovery, and building long-term resiliency has been difficult because so much government infrastructure was damaged in the earthquake, so many families were displaced. But we are not deterred. Together, we can help build a better, stronger future for the children of Haiti.

World Vision has been serving the children, families, and communities in Haiti since 1978. We’re in it for the long-term, helping for as long as we’re needed. We work with the most vulnerable communities in Haiti to improve children’s health through a number of programs that prioritize health, nutrition, and access to water and sanitation.

When you sponsor a child in Haiti

Here are just some of the ways people like you are helping children, families, and communities move from surviving to thriving through child sponsorship.

Care and protection for children

We want all children to be safe and valued, to be well-cared for by their families, and to be participating in the transformation of their communities.

  • We established child protection clubs to teach children and youth about speaking up for their rights and the rights of others, civic responsibility, and community decision making.

Haiti’s unemployment rate is extremely high. Haitian money has gone down in value, leading to high inflation rates and unaffordable everyday goods.

  • Hundreds of people have received livestock and saving groups training and we will continue with business development training for youth.

Growing healthy children and families

We want all children and families to be well nourished, protected from infection and disease, and to have access to the essential health services they need. Recently, child sponsorship programs are improving health in these ways:

  • Reducing instances of water-borne illness and disease through hygiene training, easy-to-replicate handwashing stations, and instruction on how to effectively purify water.
  • We helped bring public health and local organizations together to provide places in communities where children can get malnutrition screening, anti-parasite treatments, Vitamin A supplements to protect vision and immunity, and other supplements to help underweight children.
  • Training for farmers on improved techniques that adapt to changing conditions, resulting in higher yields and better food availability for malnourished children.

Education for a better future

Our goal is to help all children have the opportunity to learn and develop their talents, so that young people are equipped for the future, and families and communities can support children’s education. When you sponsor a child in Haiti, you’ll help children get the education they deserve.

  • Recently, child sponsorship funds have helped to improve children’s reading skills and comprehension through libraries, reading clubs, and reading camps. Each of these activities also included information on health and sanitation, such as books about the importance of handwashing.

So children can experience God’s love

We want to help children and families to grow spiritually by strengthening local churches to demonstrate God’s love in practical ways, and helping people to live at peace with their neighbors.

  • Child sponsorship programs are helping show God’s love to children and families in Haiti in these ways: Bringing faith leaders together to discuss the importance of the social mission of the church, such as their congregation’s role in community development and ensuring child protection.
