What is child sponsorship?

Child sponsorship is more than just a $39 monthly donation.

It’s a partnership that equips children to reach their God-given potential by working to end the cycle of extreme poverty.

How sponsorship works

Child sponsorship does more than support one child’s well-being. It helps strengthen the entire community with lasting access to the resources needed to thrive for generations.

A thriving community: Tiraque, Bolivia

How sponsored children benefit

Sponsorship is a powerful way to show Jesus’ love to a child, empowering them for a thriving future.

And because of our community-focused solutions, for every child you help, four more children benefit, too!

Personal connection

Through letters, photos, and shared prayers, their sponsor’s encouragement can boost their confidence and help them see their God-given potential.

Belonging

Children gain a sense of community by joining activities such as children’s clubs, educational events, and community celebrations.

Access to essentials

Our local staff work with the community to help them get access to essentials like clean water, education, nutritional support, and more.

Spiritual support

In countries open to Christianity, we reach children and families with variety of biblical resources and programs. In other settings, we shine the light of Jesus through our acts, character, and commitment to serving all people.

How sponsorship transforms communities

We follow a proven four-phase model designed to ensure that communities can continue to thrive long after they graduate.

4–6 months

We listen and plan together

We start by listening to local leaders, pastors, teachers, parents, and children. Together, we identify challenges, strengths, and goals and shape solutions to empower the community and the children who need it most.

1–5 years

We get to work, side by side

We work alongside the community to build stronger systems that support access to essentials like clean water, nutritious food, healthcare, education, child protection, and more, adjusting solutions as we learn about what works.

6–10 years

The community takes the lead

Gradually, something beautiful happens: local leaders and families step forward and begin to lead the work themselves, and we move into a supporting role, helping ensure lasting progress.

11–12+ years

The community thrives

When the community is leading on its own, we’ll celebrate all God has done—knowing you’ll always be part of your sponsored child’s story. Together, we’ll mark this milestone as one chapter ends and another begins in a new community.

Why child sponsorship works

Christ-centered

Jesus focused on caring for the most vulnerable people. And so we aim to follow Him in our work to love our neighbors by equipping children, families, and communities with resources to rise above poverty.

Holistic long-term solutions

Truly addressing poverty involves strengthening access to physical necessities like clean water, food, and healthcare while also nurturing hope, faith, and purpose.

Community-based approach

Child sponsorship goes beyond uplifting one child. It strengthens and supports the whole community so everyone is transformed for good.

Local staff

Most of our staff work in their home regions, serving alongside their community to help determine and work toward solutions.

How child sponsorship helps fight poverty

Clean water & healthcare

When children get lasting access to basics, they have time to pursue education and other opportunities that help them lift themselves out of poverty.

Education

We work with communities to remove barriers to education so children can build stronger futures and become all they were meant to be.

Child protection

Parents and community leaders are trained to prevent and address issues like abuse, exploitation, and neglect—all things that contribute to the cycle of poverty.

Economic opportunities

Parents are empowered with skills and job training, as well as access to micro-loans and savings groups, so they can better provide for their families.

Sponsorship FAQs

Child sponsorship is a monthly partnership that helps a child in poverty by funding community programs such as education, clean water, healthcare, and family income training.

Child sponsorship works to fuel change for a whole community so that your sponsored child, and every child in the community, can grow into their God-given potential. Sponsorship strengthens the systems around them so they can grow up healthy, educated, and able to support themselves. Sponsors also build a personal connection through letters and updates, while long-term community development programs address the root causes of poverty.

Sponsorship funds community-based programs that benefit your sponsored child and their entire community.

Our 70+ years of experience have taught us that the most effective way to change a child’s life is to strengthen the community around them. So, we don’t give cash benefits to one child, which can divide communities and slow progress. Instead, we combine your monthly donations with support from other sponsors to make the biggest impact on the worst problems kids face in a community. This means your donations go further, helping create a future where your sponsored child—and children growing up alongside them—can grow into all they were meant to be.

Though your monthly sponsorship donation is pooled, you’ll have opportunities to send your child a Special Gift, which can meet an individual need in their life. And registration in our sponsorship program connects your child and their family with caring local staff who can help identify and address specific needs.

Child sponsorship programs typically last 11-12+ years.

Child sponsorship is an ongoing commitment to help a child grow into their God-given potential. The length of your specific sponsorship will depend on the child’s age and how long their community’s program has been in place. Sponsorship may end when a community “graduates” by becoming self-sufficient, when a child reaches adulthood, or if a child’s family relocates.

A community graduates from World Vision’s sponsorship program when families are thriving and the community is ready to carry forward progress on their own.

Graduation happens when long-term goals — such as improved health, access to education, and economic resilience — are achieved sustainably, and when local leaders can continue managing programs independently. There is hope behind every sponsorship because, when a community graduates, resources can be redirected to areas with greater need. Graduation shows that progress is possible.

Child sponsorship provides consistent monthly support that strengthens families and infrastructure over time, helping children move beyond poverty permanently.

Both are powerful ways to help people in extreme poverty transform their lives.
One-time donations can address immediate needs or help support lasting solutions. Child sponsorship is long-term investment in a child and their community. You’ll build a one-to-one relationship while also helping the community with access to essentials that continue after the sponsorship program concludes.

As a Christian organization, our faith guides everything we do, including our commitment to serve all children with dignity and compassion.

We aim to follow Jesus in serving the poor and oppressed, especially in places where it’s hardest to be a child — and we invite sponsors to join in that movement.

In countries open to Christianity, we reach children and families in a sponsorship community with variety of biblical resources and programs. In other settings, we shine the light of Jesus through our acts, character, and commitment to serving all people. Through this, all children in our programs have opportunities to experience God’s love.

During emergencies, programs may temporarily shift to prioritize safety, food access, medical care, and child protection.

Once stability returns, long-term development efforts resume, supported by systems already in place to help communities withstand and recover from crises. Sponsorship helps strengthen communities over time, building resilience so families are better equipped to navigate and recover from emergencies. Throughout any crisis, our focus remains on the safety and well-being of children and families.
