Casualties and damage:

  • The death toll has surpassed 3,600, and thousands more have been injured.
  • The epicenter near Mandalay and Sagaing caused widespread structural damage:
    • Ma Soe Yane monastery collapsed, and the former royal palace was destroyed.
    • Mandalay airport was closed due to a damaged runway.
    • Sagaing’s 90-year-old bridge collapsed, and sections of the highway to Yangon were damaged.
    • In Naypyidaw, multiple homes partially collapsed.

Rescue and relief efforts:

  • Relief efforts are ongoing but face serious challenges. Damaged infrastructure and heavy rains are slowing access to impacted areas, while power outages are disrupting communication and emergency services.
  • Water shortages, worsened by the hot season and damage to water sources, are putting communities at increased risk of illnesses from unsafe drinking water

“Roads have been severely damaged, making it difficult for us to get aid to those who need it,” said Kyi Minn, World Vision’s national director in Myanmar. “Families are struggling to survive soaring temperatures without shelter, food, or medical care while enduring immense physical and emotional trauma.”

“It is critical that children can return to a sense of normalcy as soon as possible,” he said. “They need safe homes, access to education, and protection from the risks of child labor, marriage, and other forms of exploitation. We must act urgently to ensure these children are safe and can rebuild their lives.”
